John Hilsen
Piano, Composition Piano, Improv, Theory and Music Technology
John is the music director for the hit stage show HYPROV, an improv comedy production regularly starring and created by comedy legend Colin Mochrie (“Whose Line Is It Anyway?”). He has performed with HYPROV on over two hundred tour shows across North America, as well as extended residencies in both Las Vegas and Off-Broadway NYC, where his performance was praised by The New Yorker who wrote “John Hilsen’s keyboard accompaniment is itself a feat of improvisation.”
John also performs with local improv and scripted theater productions. He was awarded “Best Music and Soundscape Composition” by Lavender Magazine in their “Best of 2018” list for his original score of The Minotaur. He has composed two instrumental albums that are streamed daily by listeners worldwide.
John has been teaching piano for over fifteen years. He loves to approach lessons with a focus on how fun music can be, and integrates composition, improv, theory, and music technology into lessons as his students explore the world of music and make it their own.
