Getting Started

Can I start lessons at any time?
Yes! New students can begin lessons throughout the year whenever an instructor has availability. After you submit a lesson request, we'll help match you with the right teacher and find a lesson time that works for your schedule.

How do I get started?
Complete the New Student Lesson Request form. We'll review your information, recommend an instructor if needed, and contact you with available lesson times.

Tuition & Payments

When is tuition due?
Tuition is due before the first lesson of each month. Payment reserves your weekly lesson time on the instructor’s schedule.

Why do I still pay if I miss a lesson?
Monthly tuition reserves a specific weekly lesson time. Because that time is held for you, tuition is still required for each week the instructor is scheduled to teach, even if the student does not attend.

How will I receive my invoice?
Invoices are emailed 7 days before the first of the month.

Can I pay quarterly instead of monthly?
Yes. Payments are invoiced monthly unless you have arranged to pay quarterly.

Music Lab quarters:
  • Fall: September through November
  • Winter: December through February
  • Spring: March through May
  • Summer: June through August
Please contact the office if you would like to set up quarterly payments.

How can I pay?
You may pay by:
  • Online bank payment through the student portal with no fee
  • Credit card through the student portal with a 2.9% convenience fee
  • Check or cash placed in one of the Music Lab payment dropboxes
  • Payment mailed to Music Lab, 5161 Bloomington Ave S., Minneapolis, MN 55417
If you need a student portal login, please contact the office.

Is there a late fee?
Yes. If payment is not received by the due date listed on the invoice, a $10 late fee will be added.

What happens if my account is unpaid?
If payment is not made within 14 days after the invoice date , lessons will be put on pause until payments are up to date.

Missed Lessons & Make-ups

Who should I contact if I will miss a lesson?
Please contact your instructor directly as soon as possible. If there is sickness or a same-day emergency, email, call, or text the instructor directly.

Does notifying the instructor create a lesson credit?
No. Notifying the instructor is helpful and appreciated, but it does not automatically create a lesson credit.

Are make-up lessons available?
Some instructors allow one excused absence per quarter with a make-up credit. Not every instructor offers make-ups.

What happens if lessons are missed without notifying anyone?
Un-notified absences for two weeks in a row may result in the student being removed from the instructor’s schedule.

Instructor Absences and Studio Closures

What happens if my instructor misses a lesson?
If your instructor has to miss a lesson, you will be notified and a credit will be applied to your account for future use.

Are there lessons on holidays?
There are no lessons on Thanksgiving, Christmas, New Year’s, Memorial Day, the 4th of July, or Labor Day.

Instructors may also take breaks during the year. Please check with your instructor so you can plan ahead.

Discontinuing Lessons

How do I stop lessons?
Two weeks’ notice is required if you wish to discontinue lessons.

Registration and Performances

Is there a registration fee?
Yes. New students registering for lessons, labs, or camps have a $20 registration fee. Families with 2 or more students have a discounted family registration fee of $30.

Are there performance opportunities?
Yes. Music Lab offers regular monthly performances. Students are encouraged to participate in at least one performance event each year.

Is there a recital fee?
Yes. The recital fee is $5 per performance, or $20 for the full year of unlimited performances.
