About the Music Lab

We're a creative, laid-back music school in South Minneapolis, and we've been part of this community since 2011. We work with kids, teens, and adults at every level, from complete beginners, longtime players, and everyone in between.
Every teacher at the lab is well educated and a working musician. We perform, record, write, and collaborate all over the Twin Cities. Students learn scales and exercises, then they learn how music actually lives and breathes. How to listen. How to create. How to trust themselves.
Some students come in knowing exactly what they want. Others just want to try something new. Some are chasing a specific song, a certain style, or a long-held dream. Some simply want to keep improving and get really good at their instrument. We have a teacher for everyone.
There's no requirement to perform or join a band. For students who want those opportunities, they're here. For those who don't, we stay focused on steady growth and personal joy. Some students keep things casual for years. Others go on to record, play live, and start bands. We love both paths equally.
Wherever you're starting from, we'll meet you there. The goal at the Music Lab is building the kind of skills and confidence that keep you playing for years, for life, for the pure love of it.

Our Story

The Music Lab was founded in 2011 by Josie Just and Jillian Rae, two working musicians who wanted to build something different. They wanted to create a space that felt creative, supportive, and connected to the Twin Cities music scene.
In the early days, the studio was built by hand, including soundproofing the rooms themselves. What grew out of that scrappy beginning is a real community of teachers, students, and families who come together around music. Today the school is led by Josie, who continues to shape its direction, its culture, and its teaching philosophy. The faces have grown and the roster has expanded, and the original idea is still at the heart of everything: making a place where students feel comfortable, inspired, and excited to play. |
